Interview with Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain about The Martian, via EW:

Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain have starred in two of the biggest science-fiction films of the last year, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and Ridley Scott’s forthcoming The Martian. “Each time I get to do a few more scenes with Jessica. We got 10 minutes in this one,” Damon told JD Heyman when asked about The Martian at the PEOPLE, InStyle and Entertainment Weekly’s photo studio on Friday. “Then hopefully a full film next time.”

Based on the book by Andy Weir, The Martian stars Damon as Mark Whatney, a botanist who gets stranded on Mars after his crew, led by Chastain, leaves him for dead following an accident. As Whatney uses his smarts to survive, his crew and the earthbound NASA scientists devise ways to bring him home.

“When I met the screenwriter, Drew Goddard, he said he wanted the movie to be a love-letter to science,” Damon said. “I think that it is. But I think something both Drew and Andy in the book do really a really good job of is making the science understandable.”

Yesterday, 20th Century Fox has unveiled a new viral video that asks if Matt Damon’s cocksure botanist Mark Watney is made of the right stuff. Focusing less on the Ares-3 and its mission on the red planet, today’s footage takes a closer look at the man in the suit, and the rigorous training regime he undergoes to fulfil his dream.

Once complete, Damon’s budding astronaut will enlist alongside his fellow crew mates as they make tracks for Mars, but after touching down on the martian terrain, it isn’t long before all hell breaks loose. When a raging storm comes bearing down from one of the planet’s vast, towering mountain ranges, Ares-3 uproots and abandons its mission, accidentally leaving Watney behind in the process.

Cast astray on the arid, sun-scorched planet, Damon’s character is long presumed dead, though it’s only when he engineers a means of contacting the remainder of the crew that he’s forced to put that rigorous training into practice and, against all odds, carves out a rudimentary existence on Mars while he waits to be rescued.

The Martian will have its theaterical release on October 2, and it will premiere tomorrow on TIFF.

Some news on the upcoming Bourne movie, via Games Radar

Matt Damon is soon to return to the Bourne franchise, having sat out the Jeremy Renner-starring Legacy, and according to the star, the fifth film in the series will be inspired by recent real-world happenings. As Damon explained to BuzzFeed, the Edward Snowden affair proved to be the inspiration he and director Paul Greengrass were looking for, with the events of 2013 having a significant influence on the plot of the new film.

“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” explains Damon. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”

As is traditional with the Bourne movies, this latest outing will span various global locations, with even the choice of setting having a political context. “We’re starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy,” explains Damon. “And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation…” Bourne 5 will open in the UK and US on June 29, 2016.

Ridley Scott’s new film The Martian (out Oct. 2) will screen at this year’s Fantastic Fest, it was announced today. This year’s Fantastic Fest takes place Sept. 24-Oct. 1 at the South Lamar location of the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain in Austin, Tex.

Other new additions to the Fantastic Fest lineup include Ben Wheatley’s J.G. Ballard adaptation High-Rise, director Jeremy Saulnier’s Patrick Stewart-starring Green Room, Joe Begos’ new horror tale The Mind’s Eye, the world premiere of the sci-fi comedy Lazer Team, and a digital restoration of the 1972 Japanese anime film Belladonna of Sadness.

About one in nine people, or 750 million people globally, do not have access to safe water. Around the world, women and children are spending 140 million hours a day collecting water.

Water.org, cofounded and supported by actor Matt Damon, has been screening and certifying quality indigenous partner organizations for over 20 years who best understand the needs of their local culture. They can navigate the social, political, and economic issues which may impact projects, are better able to leverage local financial resources for cost-sharing, and know the local expertise which exists for project implementation. It is also more cost effective than hiring expatriate staff. The motto is “Safe water and the dignity of a toilet for all.”

Communities and individuals become invested owners by contributing to the project cost. Communities can contribute at least 10 percent of the total project cost through grants, either by financial contributions, securing local materials, or doing physical labor or “sweat equity.” The WaterCredit branch allows people to get loans through its network of local partner organizations such as join-lending groups, women’s self-help groups, and community-based organizations. Typical loans range in size from $50 – $200 USD.

One of the first steps is the community election of a local water committee which plays a critical role in the project’s success. Since women disproportionately bear the water collection burden, the committee must include female members. They serve as a liaison between the community and partner organization, facilitate the hygiene education program, and determine the project construction community work schedule. Committee members are also trained on operation and maintenance of the water and sanitation systems, and management of the finances.

Whether a project is grant funded or involves small water and sanitation loans, community ownership is integral to its success. Water.org insists on community involvement at every step from project planning, financing, and building through ongoing project maintenance.

The WaterCredit Initiative helps with the small water and sanitation loans to communities and individuals who have no access to traditional credit markets, empowering them to solve their own water issues more quickly. As loan payments are paid in, the money is assigned to other people with water needs. For details on WaterCredit, view the website.

A new viral for “The Martian”, which is set for release on October 2nd:

Before the first trailer for Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi drama The Martian debuted, 20th Century Fox teased the film with a viral video from the video archives of the Ares 3, the latest mission to Mars. And now a second viral video has debuted with Matt Damon and the rest of his crew being interviewed by a NASA psychologist after experiencing 10 days in isolation.

From the video it’s made pretty clear that Damon has no problem being stuck by himself for 10 days, with the most pressing question he has upon emerging being about Aquaman’s abilities. And honestly, it’s a perfectly valid question. Watch The Martian viral video after the jump!

Michael Pena didn’t have any problems getting used to the isolation either, choosing to partake in a more primitive way to pass the time, while Aksel Hennie isn’t scared at all, simply because he’s German. Sebastian Stan seems to be in perfect condition as a doctor who deals with stressful situations everyday, and Kate Mara is just plain sleepy, but she gives us the rundown on how she feels about the rest of the crew.

One of the more intriguing parts of this video is Jessica Chastain‘s silence when asked if she feels any pressure as the first female crew member on an Ares mission to Mars. Could that be telling of something that happens in the movie? Either way, this is one of the more clever viral marketing campaigns we’ve seen in a long time, and I hope there’s much more in store leading up to the fall release.

Don’t forget, The Martian has moved up to an earlier release date on October 2nd, and you can still watch the first trailer for the sci-fi flick right here.

The synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
